5 Options If Your Windows 10 PC FAILS The Windows 11 Compatibility Test

November 18, 2024

As you've probably heard, Windows 10 will reach its end of life on October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing free security updates, non-security updates, and technical support for this version. However, this doesn't mean your PC will stop working; it just means you'll be responsible for maintaining its security and performance.

If you've tried upgrading to Windows 10 but encountered compatibility issues and error messages, don't worry—there are still options available to you.

Here are five options you can consider:

  1. Ignore the Deadline: While not recommended, you can choose to continue using Windows 10 without support. Be aware that without ongoing security updates, your device will be more vulnerable to cyber threats and viruses. Additionally, the lack of technical support and non-security updates could impact your computer's performance.
  2. Switch to Linux: If you're not ready to replace your PC and have the technical know-how, you can uninstall Windows 10 and switch to the Linux operating system. This transition may come with its own challenges, so be prepared to handle any issues that arise.
  3. Upgrade "Incompatible" PCs Using a Technical Loophole: Even if your PC failed the initial upgrade attempt, you might still be able to upgrade it by using a workaround. ZDNET provides a guide for this process, which involves a minor registry edit and ensuring your PC is set up for Secure Boot with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). If you see a warning that your PC won't be supported after the upgrade, it simply means the manufacturer won't be liable for any issues due to lack of compatibility.
  4. Pay for Microsoft's Windows 10 Security Updates: Although free updates will cease, Microsoft announced in December 2023 that they will offer Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 10 on a subscription basis for up to three years. The cost for businesses starts at $61 for the first year, doubling each subsequent year, while educators receive a significant discount. Note that these updates are cumulative and do not include technical support.
  5. Purchase a New PC: If your current device is nearing obsolescence, buying a new PC compatible with Windows 11 is a wise choice. New computers typically offer enhanced speed, better security, and increased productivity. Before making this decision, ensure you back up your data thoroughly to prevent data loss.

Consider these options carefully and choose the one that best suits your needs and circumstances.
